- Confucius exalted virtues such as filial piety, reverent respect and obedience toward parents and grandparents, humanity, an unselfish concern for the welfare of others, integrity, and a sense of duty.
- The eventual success of Confucian ideas owes much to Confucius's followers in the two centuries after his death, particularly to Mencius (371-289 BC) and Xunzi (300-235 BC).
